How to purge your house to make your move more fun

Does moving bring you anxiety? Just the thought of packing a house stress you out? I’m here with a few tips and tricks to make it a little more fun in the end!

I have moved a lot in my life…at least 16 times. This includes 3 cities, 2 states, and several different neighborhoods. And my husband and I just bought a house, so here we go again!

To say I’ve learned a lesson or two would be an understatement.

Boxes, tape, trash bags…so. much. stuff. Just thinking about packing up a house can be stressful. The first problem: there’s a lot of stuff you don’t want to take with you. And who wants to keep storing trash over and over? Not me!

Step 1: PURGE!

Packing is always a big ordeal, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Let the purge begin!

Start with unpacking in mind.

As you start your purge (and later, packing) keep the end in mind. Rooms, closets, storage spaces, etc. If you can organize while you pack, it makes the unpacking process so. much. easier.

This might seem obvious, but I have been guilty of just throwing things in boxes with the anticipation of a move. Only to find unpacking everything is a giant mess.

Room by room

Start with ONE room. I started in our office. This will make it less overwhelming. Note: As you find things that belong in other rooms, take it there so it will be packed accordingly later.

Make piles

4 to be exact.

This is pretty self-explanatory.

Tip: As you pack one room at a time, keep an open box to pack stuff that will go in that room that you find around the house.
